Press Release - Raise the ISA limit DarlingAlistair Darling must rescue ‘cash refugees’ by raising the Stocks & Shares ISA limit to £10,000 says Chartwell Direct.
Chartwell Direct, one of the UK’s leading investment brokers, has today urged Chancellor Alistair Darling to raise the ISA limit to £10,000, after announcing his commitment to help savers.
In a national newspaper interview, Darling confirmed that he is going to help older savers in next month’s budget. Darling went on to say “I am very conscious that there are a lot of people, particularly elderly ones who rely on savings, and I have to look at it.”
In response to Mr. Darling’s comments, Rob Hudson of Chartwell Direct pressed the Chancellor to act on these words when he presents his budget on 22 April.
“Many savers feel let down by successive governments. The fact that the ISA limit was recently raised by a meagre £200 to £7,200 (and by £100 to £3,600 for those staying in Cash) will be scant consolation to the millions who have been saving prudently. Had the government raised the ISA limit each year in line with inflation, savers in this country should now be able to shelter nearly £9,000 annually from Income and Capital Gains Tax. A positive measure now would be to correct the unequal treatment savers have received over borrowers and raise the ISA limit to £10,000”
Hudson also went on to say: “With many individuals now benefiting from lower mortgage payments, there’s a definite opportunity to begin to build a nest egg for the future now through regular savings.”
“At Chartwell, we are seeing more enquiries from ‘cash refugees’ who are disappointed by the rates available on cash deposits and are now looking to invest further in the market as a valuable source of income. Many of these cash refugees are simply unable to meet their income requirements now. ISA investing is up on last year and all the top-selling funds are lower risk Corporate Bond and income producing funds. Our view is that as long as investors understand the variable nature of bond, gilt and equity income yields, there is a great opportunity to be investing in order to take advantage of depressed valuations and high historic yields.”
